Rob
October 19th

Is 2008 going to be USAT sanctioned? Thank you!!
---------------------------------------
Pixie
Just wondering if the t-shirts are cotton or tech tees? Thanks . . .
---------------------------------------
Rob (race director)
The 2008 race will be USAT Sanctioned. I've had all the paperwork submitted for several weeks now, except for one map I need to re-do.
We are planning on having USAT race marshalls this year as well.
Finally, I've taken a bit of training during the off season...

Final details on the shirts are still to be determined, but we are hoping to have the same sort of dry fit shirt that we had last year.

How much is a one day usat membership?
---------------------------------------
Rob (race director)
An adult USAT one day membership is $10 and may be applied toward a $39 annual membership.

Is there going to be a kids race on Saturday?
---------------------------------------
Rob (race director)
There will not be a kids race on Saturday due to logistical issues.

hi,just wondering, does everyone use a road type bike? does anyone use a mountain bike? thanks..diane
---------------------------------------
Rob (race director)
The serious athletes tend to ride bikes designed for triathlon use. Others (myself included) use regular road bikes when they participate in a triathlon. A few folks who have a goal of simply finishing a triathlon will ride a mountain bike. The key is that the bike needs to be safe. We look for bar end caps. Recumbent bikes are NOT authorized for triathlon use.

You website indicates $80 registration fee for th international distance but Active.com says $95. Will you still honor the $80 price, and can we mail it in?
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
The Active.com pricing is correct. I'm not positive where you found the early bird pricing that expired at the end of July.

When do we register and set up our bikes at transition area? Will you have a schedule for Sat/Sun. Thanks
---------------------------------------
Rob (race director)
Packet pickup will be available Saturday. The time is still subject to change. Bikes can be placed in the transition area beginning Sunday morning, exact time TBA.

Is there a specific mt bike division and if so what are the specifics on the tire tread
--want to know if I need to go buy new tires. It'll be my first time at longleaf--should be nice!!!
---------------------------------------
Rob (race director)
There is no separate division for folks riding mountain bikes. I would recommend smooth tires though.

Is the race going to be time trial start again? On the website there is mention of a "no passing" rule. Could you explain this? One concern I have for the time trial start is that some of the elites/trigators (ashish patel, etc.) were starting at the back and passing maybe 50 cyclists on the narrow roads of Starkey Park, which didn't appear as safe to me as most wave start races. It would be nice to see the elites/trigators start early and get out of the way of the slower athletes.
---------------------------------------
Rob (race director)
The no-passing rule discussed pertains to specific parts of the trail that are narrow and dangerous as a result. This ONLY effects the international distance competitors and only for a very short section. The sprint bike route has been modified to make it safer. Assuming the trigators are doing the sprint again this year, things should work out okay.

WHat time do you suggest we show up sunday morning?
WHat do the registration fee include? lunch t shirt?
What prizes are there for top finishes in age groups and overall?

I know that international distance tris are a standard distance, however a sprint can very usually in the swim and bike distances. I don't see the sprint distances anywhere on the website, right?
---------------------------------------
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
The exact time the transition area will open on Sunday will be announced a little closer to the event. I would pencil in 6:30am or shortly thereafter. We have awarded trophies in the past and I expect we will do the same this year. We are looking to provide a very nice "dry fit" T-shirt for participants again this year, although you must register by the end of September to get a shirt.
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
We plan to have a nice spread available again this year after you finish the race.
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
Looks like the distances disappeared when we updated the website. The correct distances are as follows:
Sprint: 1/4 mile swim, 9 mile bike, 3.1 mile run.
International: 0.9 mile swim, 23-24 mile bike, 6.2 mile run.
The Sprint bike route is being shortened this year to avoid a potentially dangerous area at the far end of the route.

The link to view the results from last year's event was not available on the home page.
Would you be able to activate the link for us?
Thanks!

Rob (Race Director)
Good catch. The updated home page didn't have the correct links imbedded. That has been corrected.

Hello everyone,
I would really like to try this triathlon but I am nervous about the swim. I have never done a triathlon and I am not a great swimmer. I am sure I could finish but I would be pretty slow. Is this race ok for slow swimmers?
thanks,
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
The sprint swim is only 1/4 mile and even a slow swimmer should be able to complete it in a reasonable time. If you are concerned about your swimming ability, you might want to find a friend that swims well and enter as a team.

Can i purchase a one day usat license the day of the event as
long as I pre-register for the actual race before september 30?
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
Yes. You an purchase the one day USAT license on site.

Is the international distance a time trial start or age group start? I was not asked for my swim time if it is a time trial start and was not sure if I missed it when registering on Active.com.
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
We use age as a proxy for speed.
---------------------------------------
Ben
I hear its a staggered start, if im a good swimmer will I be put ahead of people?
id hate to get caught behind slow swimmers.
Im doing the International.
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
The lake is wide enough and the swimmers spread out enough that you shouldn't get boxed up by slower swimmers.

Has the time been set for the early packet pick-up on Saturday?
I'm coming up from SW FL for the Jazz Festival, the USF homecoming game
and the Longleaf Tri and I want to fit everyting in.
Thanks, Jim

Rob (Race Director)
Packet pickup will be available from 9am to 5pm on Saturday

Why is the price the same for sprint and international relays?
---------------------------------------
Clara
Why are the prices for sprint and international relays identical but so different for individuals?
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
I don't recall the logic, but that is the way the committee set the prices this year.

how much of the swim is deep water? in other words, is any of it like a majority if local beach tris where you can stand as needed or at least swim easily into shallow? also, with the wave start, do athenas (if you have that category here?) go with the youngest age group towards the end? thanks for your response!

Can you use an MP3 player for the bike and run portion of the triathlon? Also, if you did not register before October 1, can you still receive a t-shirt?
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
MP3 players and similar are strictly prohibited.
T-Shirts MAY be available for late registrations, but they are not guaranteed.

I received the email about the lake temperature and am hoping that it will be warm enough not to need a wetsuit, but the fishing websites like fishingnotes.com show some current florida lake temps in the low 70's and no weather changes expected in the next 2 weeks. Have you measured the lake temperature?

The link to last years results are not active yet. Can you fix this? Will it be possible to pick up packets on race day?
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
Last year's results can be found at www.altavistasports.com.
We STRONGLY encourage packet pickup on Saturday. We have over 400 folks racing this year and it's going to get pretty crowded if everyone shows up Sunday morning.
---------------------------------------
Dave
Where is packet pick-up?
---------------------------------------
Rob (race director)
Packet pickup will be at the Longleaf Town Hall.
BTW, the web spammers are at it again, so I'm now moderating posts to this message area.

Active.com indicated that registration would last until October 15th. I now see that the registration is closed. Is there anyway to register? I really want to race the international distance.
---------------------------------------
Rob (Race Director)
We are completely full. We MAY see a few cancellations and I've started a list. You can email me at rob@gulfcoastnetworking.com if you would like to be on the waiting list.

That was a great race. The weather was beautiful. The people were very nice and helpful. Thanks so much! I'll be back next year.

Glad you enjoyed it.
